Tahap selanjutnya menghadapkan manusia pada kenyataan bahwa apa yang diproduksi sendiri tidak cukup untuk memenuhi kebutuhannya. Untuk memperoleh barang-barang yang tidak dapat dihasilkan sendiri mereka mencari dari orang yang mau menukarkan barang yang dimilikinya dengan barang lain yang dibutuhkannya.
